Adahal menarik dalam Oscar tahun ini yaitu untuk pertama kalinya dua sutradara wanita dinominasikan dalam kategori Sutradara Terbaik yaitu Chloe Zhao (Nomadland) dan Emerald Fennel (Promising young Woman).

Diketahui juga Sutradara Chloe Zhao merupakan wanita Asia pertama yang memenangkan Golden Globe untuk Sutradara Terbaik pada bulan lalu melalui filmnya Nomadland.
Chloe Zhao adalah seorang sutradara yang dibesarkan di Beijing, Inggris, dan Los Angeles. Sutradara dengan nama lahir Zhao Ting ini lahir pada 31 Maret 1982 di Beijing, Tiongkok.
Melansir IMDB, pada awal karirnya Zhao membuat beberapa film pendek termasuk Post (2008) dan The Atlas Mountains (2009). Zhao memulai debutnya di film Songs My Brothers Taught Me, sebuah drama Amerika yang dibuat bersama rekannya, Joshua James Richards.
Sedangkan sutradara Promising Young Woman, Emerald Lilly Fennellmerupakan sutradara asal Inggris. Ia juga merupakanseorang aktris, penulis sekaligus penulis naskah.
Dia terkenal sebagai pemeran dalam musim kedua dari seri televisi BBC Americaberjudul Killing Eve yang mendapatkan dua nominasi Primetime Emmy Awards.
Pada tahun 2020, Fennell memulai debut sebagai sutradara dalam film berjudul Promising Young Womanyangdibintangi oleh Carey Mulligan.
Film itu memulai rilis perdana di Festival Film Sundance dan kali ini film itu juga masuk dalam kategori film terbaik Oscar 2021.
Selain itu, dalam daftar nominasi tersebut, film Mank mendominasi dengan dinominasikan dalam 10 kategori.

Mank bakal bersaing untuk mendapatkan film terbaik dengan film lainnya seperti Nomadland, Sound of Metal, The Father, Minari, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Promising Young Woman, dan Judas and the Black Messiah.
Perhelatan Piala Oscar atau Academy Awards 2021 sebelumnya mengalami beberapa kali penundaan karena pandemi Covid-19.
Acara ini bakal disiarkan langsung di ABC pada 25 April di Los Angeles Union Station dan Dolby Theatre dengan pasangan Priyanka Chopra dan Nick Jonas bakal membacakan 23 kategori nominasi.
